So people bought half-acre lots and built one house at a time, for decades, and almost none of it repeated. Today's permits are largely remodels and tear-down rebuilds dropped back onto those same old lots. You can read the history straight off the street signs:

- the curving Country Gardens loops off Hintz and Schoenbeck — Stonegate, Wildwood, Glenbrook and Sherwood

- an equestrian pocket on Highgoal, Equestrian and Paddock
- a run of pre-Columbian names east of Wolf Road on Aztec, Maya and Chimu
Each of those pockets was platted in a different decade by different hands, and it shows on the inside of the houses.
The railroad splits the town in half, and the housing changes completely across it. Only 37 percent of homes here are detached — the rest are townhomes, condos and apartments, with 22.8 percent of all units in buildings of twenty or more, and the median Prospect Heights home was finished in 1976, the exact year the city finally existed.
Detached houses take up half the city's land while every multifamily building in town sits on under 7 percent of it, and another quarter of the ground is Chicago Executive Airport, rail and road. The airport is loud rather than dirty, and we would rather tell you that than sell you something for it.

Our lower level has been wet before. Is that something you need to tell us about?
Yes, please tell us. A finished lower level is a scheduled add-on rather than part of the standard visit, because it is a whole additional floor of work. Prospect Heights told Cook County in writing that it has residential neighborhoods served by aging and undersized or no storm sewer, and the city's own plans name Willow Trails, Country Pines and the Sherwood, Glenbrook and Wildwood streets among the places that flood. We added on twice and the addition has different floors than the original house. Do you clean them differently?
