A Palm Sunday tornado tore through the village in April 1965, so part of that section is a rebuild from the year after. The Island Lake Historical Society meets the first Monday of the month and keeps the photographs.
The other half of town arrived all at once. An 800-acre annexation in 1980 roughly tripled the village and set off twenty years of building — Fox River Shores, Westridge, Waterford, Waters Edge and the Nantucket, Southport and Newbury townhome villages — until 1,840 homes, 61 percent of everything in Island Lake, stood from that one stretch. Another 368 went up in the 2000s, and then it nearly stopped — twenty houses village-wide between 2010 and 2020, with Prairie Woods restarting around 2014 and Walnut Glen adding 35 homes in 2024.
It is a village that shares some things and runs others itself. Island Lake has two schools inside its limits — Cotton Creek and Matthews Middle — but no high school and no library of its own, so the kids finish at Wauconda High and the nearest book drop sits outside Village Hall. It runs its own police, its own lake and its own water — still well water, softened at the village plant, with Lake Michigan water planned for later this decade.

We're in one of the old cottages near the lake. Is that a harder house to clean?
It is a different house, not a harder one. About ten feet separates one old-section house from the next, and inside they are 1930s cottages winterized and added onto in stages — half-levels, odd steps between rooms, low ceilings and small windows. We have no mudroom and no garage, so the beach comes straight in the front door. What do you do about that?

Stairs between every zone change the job more than square footage does, because the vacuum goes up and down instead of across. Shared drives and street parking get sorted before the visit rather than on the day.
Our 1990s bathroom looks stained no matter how much we clean it. Can you fix that?
Partly, and we will be straight about which part. Grout and tub surrounds from the 1980s and 90s are at the end of their lives across most of this village, and some of what looks like dirt is worn glaze and porous grout that no cleaning brings back. Mineral film does come off, a layer at a time over several visits. Nothing we carry is harsh enough to etch glass or dull a glaze, and we would rather say that than sell you a miracle. Do you clean the lower level?
In the 1980s and 90s subdivisions, yes — but a finished basement is a scheduled add-on rather than part of the standard visit, because it is a whole extra floor of work. Many of the oldest cottages have a crawl space instead, which is not a cleaning space at all.
Our lower level smells musty in summer. Is that a cleaning problem?
Usually it is a humidity problem, and it is common here — Island Lake sits on hydric soils with water on nearly every side. Cleaning removes what feeds the smell: dust, damp cardboard sitting on the floor, and a dehumidifier tray and coil growing biofilm. Every fall we get boxelder bugs and cobwebs at the windows. Do you handle that?
