What does green cleaning actually mean at Happy Maids?
It means the products we carry in the door, and the training behind them — not a certification. Happy Maids buys its own eco-friendly products, brings them to every job, and trains every cleaner on how to use them properly. Nothing is drawn from your cupboard.
That distinction matters, because a product only works the way it is meant to when the person using it knows the dwell time, the dilution and the surface. Green products punish guesswork more than harsh ones do.

Which cleaning products do the teams actually use?
Most cleaning companies that sell green cleaning will not print this list. Happy Maids will, because the everyday products are green and a small number of job-specific products are not, and you should know that before a team is standing in your kitchen.
Everyday cleaning — Better Life: glass cleaner, floor cleaner, wood polish, stainless steel polish, granite and stone cleaner, kitchen and bath scrubber.
Specific jobs — conventional products: a peroxide cleaner, a bathroom cleaner, a powdered cleanser, toilet bowl cleaner, and bleach or a bleach cleanser where a stain needs it.
If you would rather one of those never came into your home, tell the office before your visit and it stays on the truck.
Can I ask you to use my own cleaning products instead?
Yes — tell the office ahead of time and leave them out for the team. Plenty of clients have a product they trust on a particular surface, and we would rather use it than argue about it.
Two honest caveats, both published in the Happy Maids policies:
- We cannot promise the usual standard. The teams are trained on our own products and know how they behave; an unfamiliar product is a variable
- Products and equipment you supply are used at your own risk — Happy Maids cannot cover damage to a surface, or to your own vacuum, caused by them
- Tell the office rather than the crew. The instruction needs to be on your file, not remembered by whoever came last time
What green cleaning does not mean
Green cleaning is the easiest page on a cleaning website to overclaim, so here is where Happy Maids stops.
- It is not a certification. Happy Maids does not hold a green certification for its cleaning service, and does not claim one
- It is not a health promise. No cleaning visit can deliver a health outcome, and anyone selling you one is guessing
- It is not chemical-free. A bleach cleanser is still on the truck for stains — named above rather than hidden
- It will not force hard water off in one visit. Happy Maids will not use a harsh chemical or an abrasive pad to strip mineral buildup in a single go, because that etches glass and damages tile permanently
What happens to hard water spots on shower glass?
Each visit takes another layer off, and over several visits the glass comes back. The water in the Barrington area is genuinely hard, and private wells are harder still, so this is a local problem rather than a housekeeping failure.
What Happy Maids will not do is force it in one visit. The products that strip heavy mineral buildup quickly also etch glass and pit tile, and that damage does not come out. Once the glass is clear, regular cleaning keeps it clear — buildup never gets a chance to re-establish.

Are your green cleaning products certified?
Happy Maids does not claim a certification, and does not hold one for its cleaning service. What we can tell you is exactly what we bring and who is trained on it.
We would rather be checkable than impressive. The everyday products are Better Life, supplied by us, and the exceptions are named on this page rather than buried.
Is your cleaning chemical-free or non-toxic?
No, and we will not say it is. The everyday products are eco-friendly, but a bleach cleanser still comes out for a stain that needs it.
A cleaning company that tells you it uses nothing but water and good intentions is either not cleaning your toilet properly or not telling you what is in the caddy. Ask to see the list — ours is above.
Can I have you use my own cleaning products?
Yes. Let the office know before the visit and leave them out for the team.

Can you use green products around my pets and small children?
Happy Maids does not make safety claims about any product, and no cleaning company honestly can. What we can do is give you control over what comes in.
- Tell the office which products you do not want used, and they stay on the truck
- Supply your own for any surface you feel strongly about
- Close the door on any room you want left alone — a closed door means the team does not go in
- Tell the office about pets in advance, for their safety and the crew's
Do I need to supply anything for the cleaning?
No. Happy Maids provides every product and every tool, vacuums included.
The one exception is a linen change, which is an add-on charged per bed: lay the clean set on each bed before we arrive, because the team will not go through your closets. Used linens are left in the laundry room — Happy Maids does not do laundry.
Does green cleaning cost more?
Green cleaning is not a separate service you add on — the products come with the team on every visit, so there is nothing extra to choose.
