What is included in a move-out cleaning?
A move-out cleaning includes everything on a deep clean plus the places only an empty house allows: the gaps beside and behind the appliances, cabinet fronts, edges and knobs hand-washed, doors, frames, trim and baseboards hand-washed throughout, window sills, blinds and trim hand-washed, and floors vacuumed then mopped wall to wall.

Which is the bigger job, move-in or move-out?
Move-in is usually the bigger of the two, and most people assume the opposite. A move-out is measured against what an inspector will look at; a move-in is measured against the fact that you are about to put your dishes, your towels and your children in the place.
A move-out clean can rationally skip the inside of a cabinet you emptied yesterday. A move-in clean cannot skip anything, because you do not know what the last household did in any of it. That is the whole difference in one sentence.
How long does a move-out clean take?

What makes one move-out clean cost more than another?
Move-out, move-in, deep and post-remodel cleaning are all priced by the time the home actually takes — hourly, and pro-rated for every ten minutes. That is the honest structure, and it is why no company can quote a real number for an empty house sight unseen without padding it.
Recurring service is different: a flat, predictable rate set by home size, the services chosen and the condition of the home. The one-time services are the ones that have to be timed, because their whole job is bringing a home up to a standard rather than holding it there.
What moves the number up or down:
- Bathroom count, more than bedroom count
- How long since the last real clean — years of build-up is time, not difficulty
- Add-ons taken — oven, refrigerator, emptied cabinets, interior window glass within step-ladder reach
- Whether the house is genuinely empty — anything still in it has to be worked around
- Stairs and hallways — spindles and long baseboard runs are quiet time sinks

What is not included in a move-out clean?

Should the clean happen before or after the movers?
Move-out: after. Move-in: before. Both for the same reason, which is that a moving truck undoes cleaning and furniture blocks it.
Leave a day of slack on either side rather than booking the clean for the morning of a closing. Severe weather, cleaner illness and scheduled holidays are published in our policies as things that move a visit, and a booking with nothing behind it has nowhere to move to. The office reschedules and calls you, which is the practical difference between a company and an individual who has a bad week.
One more thing worth doing on a move-in that has nothing to do with a checklist: an empty house is the only time the whole home is reachable at once, so replace the furnace filter and open the windows for a few hours. The EPA is clear that source control comes first and ventilation second for indoor air quality — removing what is producing the dust beats trying to filter it afterward. And if the home has wood floors, the National Wood Flooring Association warns that wet mops and steam mops damage the finish and the wood, so damp is the standard, not wet.
