An air purifier removes dust that is airborne at the moment it passes through the filter — a real but small share. Most of the dust in a home is already settled on surfaces, where no filter can reach it. Settled dust has to be removed, not filtered. Here is the honest version.
Do air purifiers really get rid of dust?
They remove the dust that is airborne — genuinely and measurably — and nothing else. A portable air cleaner pulls room air through a filter and traps whatever particles happen to be suspended in it at that moment. Dust already resting on a shelf, a floor or a screen is outside the machine's reach entirely.
The EPA's guide to air cleaners in the home states the limit directly: “Filtration does not replace the need to control pollutants and ventilate.” In plain terms, a purifier is a supplement to dust removal, never a substitute for it.
That is not a reason to skip one. It is a reason to expect the right thing from it — cleaner air, not cleaner shelves.
What do HEPA and CADR mean in plain words?
HEPA is a filter standard, not magic. A true HEPA filter is dense enough to trap extremely fine particles, including the dust fraction too small to ever see falling. The catch is the word through: a HEPA filter only cleans the air the fan actually pushes through it, one room's worth at a time.
CADR — clean air delivery rate — is the number that matters when buying. It measures how much filtered air the unit really delivers, and the EPA's guidance on it is simple: the higher the CADR, the more particles the cleaner removes and the larger the area it can serve. Three rules of thumb follow:
- Match the CADR to the room's size rather than buying the smallest unit on the shelf — an undersized purifier filters a fraction of the room and accomplishes a fraction of the job
- Run it continuously, not in bursts, because the room's air keeps mixing and new particles keep going airborne
- Replace filters on the schedule — a loaded filter chokes the airflow, and the CADR quietly collapses with it
If a purifier is running, why is there still dust on every shelf?
Because the dust you can see was never in the machine's jurisdiction. Household dust spends most of its existence settled: particles go airborne briefly — stirred by feet, vents, pets and doors — then land again within minutes or hours, usually near where they started. A purifier can only intercept them during that short airborne window.
So two things stay true at once: the purifier is working, and the shelves still need wiping. The gray face of the filter is the airborne fraction it caught; the layer on the shelf is everything that landed first. Neither disproves the other.

What removes the dust an air purifier cannot reach?
Settled dust is removed mechanically or not at all, and two tools do it without launching it back into the air:
- A sealed vacuum with a fine filter. The seal matters more than the filter badge. An unsealed machine drives air around its HEPA cartridge and exhausts fine dust straight back into the room — vacuuming that dusts the house. When is an air purifier genuinely worth running?
When cleaner air is the goal, rather than cleaner surfaces — and in one room above all. A correctly sized unit running continuously in a bedroom with the door closed filters the same air again and again, and that is where the technology earns its keep: you spend eight unbroken hours there, breathing.
The EPA's guide treats a portable air cleaner as one part of an indoor-air strategy, alongside controlling sources and ventilating — a framing that survives contact with a real Chicago-area winter, when the windows stay shut for months and the furnace stirs the whole house daily. Run it through that stretch, and through pollen season, with expectations set on the air.
