Soap scum is not dirt. It is a waxy film formed when the fatty acids in soap react with the calcium and magnesium in hard water, and it takes two steps to remove: degrease first, then dissolve the mineral with a mild acid. One product alone rarely clears it.

What is soap scum?
Soap scum is the insoluble film created when the fatty acids in bar soap react with the calcium and magnesium in hard water — a compound manufactured on your glass rather than dirt sitting on it, which is why rinsing never touches it. Why is soap scum so much worse around Barrington than in most of the country?
Because there is more calcium and magnesium in the water to react with, and it is not close. Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon, and above roughly 10.5 grains a supply is classed as very hard. Local well water runs two to three times that.
These are published figures from the villages themselves, not from a softener salesman:
- Barrington — around 23 grains per gallon. The Village pumps its own supply from the ground
- Cary — 24 to 27 grains. The Village's own water FAQ gives that range across nine municipal wells and attributes the hardness to the high gravel content in the soil
- Fox River Grove — 28 grains. The 2023 Water Quality Report states it plainly, alongside the Village's own note that anything above 10.5 grains is considered very hard. It is the hardest number in our whole service area
- None of these villages soften the water municipally — what comes out of the ground is what arrives at your shower head
For scale against a national benchmark, the USGS classifies anything above 180 mg/L as very hard water, and notes that hard water is prevalent across the east-central United States. One grain per gallon is about 17 mg/L, so 23 grains is roughly 390 mg/L and 28 grains is roughly 480 mg/L — more than double the threshold at which water is already called very hard.
That is the whole reason this is a constant conversation in Cary house cleaning and Fox River Grove house cleaning and barely a topic in a lake-water suburb twenty miles east. Same soap, same shower habits, several times the mineral load.
One local wrinkle worth knowing. A good many homes with a Cary or Fox River Grove address sit outside village limits on private wells with no municipal iron treatment, and untreated iron stains orange-brown rather than white. If your marks are rust-colored rather than chalky, you are looking at an iron problem, and a general bathroom cleaner will set it rather than lift it.
How do you remove soap scum from glass shower doors?
In two stages, in this order. Degrease the fatty layer first with very warm water and a grease-cutting dish soap, rinse, then dissolve the mineral layer with a mild acid kept wet against the glass for twenty to thirty minutes. Work it with a non-scratch pad, rinse, dry.
Skipping the degrease step is the single most common reason a shower door "will not come clean". The acid never reaches the mineral, because a layer of insoluble soap is sitting on top of it.
Read the warnings in the next section before you start — they are short, and they prevent the two expensive mistakes. Then work through this:
- Ventilate and clear the shower — run the fan, open a window, and take out bottles, mats and anything metal
- Stage one, degrease — hot water and a grease-cutting dish soap on a microfiber cloth, over the whole door, then rinse. This strips the fatty half so the acid can reach the mineral underneath
- Stage two, acid — white vinegar warmed to about the temperature of a hot drink, or a citric-acid bathroom cleaner. Warm acid works measurably faster than cold, and neither should ever be boiled
- Keep it wet against the glass — soak paper towels or a microfiber cloth and press them flat to the door so the liquid cannot run off, then leave it twenty to thirty minutes
- Protect everything below and beside it — lay an old towel along the base and threshold, and rinse the shower pan and grout lines with clear water as you go, because grout is cement-based and prolonged acid contact erodes it
- Work in sections — a non-scratch nylon pad or a soft-bristle brush, moderate pressure, small areas at a time, rinsing the pad often so grit picked up from the tile never gets dragged across the glass
- Rinse thoroughly with clear water — leftover acid keeps working on things you did not intend
- Squeegee, then dry with microfiber — water left standing on the glass lays down the next layer immediately
- Repeat on another day if a haze remains — a second and third treatment is normal, and far safer than escalating the chemistry
Before you spend a fourth weekend on it, there is a ten-second test worth doing. Wet the glass and watch it. If the haze disappears while the glass is wet and returns as it dries, the deposit is still sitting on the surface and more treatment will get it.
If the glass stays hazy while wet, it is etched. The minerals have pitted the surface itself, no cleaner will fix it, and it is a glass restoration or replacement job rather than a cleaning one.

What dissolves soap scum best?
No single product, because there is no single deposit. A degreaser dissolves the fatty half and a mild acid dissolves the mineral half, and the ones that seem to work in one pass are simply products that contain both.
- Grease-cutting dish soap — the cheapest, safest first pass, and the step almost everyone skips
- White vinegar — mild acetic acid, dissolves mineral, safe on plain glass and dangerous on stone
- Citric-acid bathroom cleaners — the same job with far less smell, and usually blended with surfactants so they handle both layers at once
- Non-acidic soap scum removers — the right choice whenever there is natural stone anywhere in the shower
- Dwell time — the most underrated variable on this list. Twenty minutes of contact beats twenty minutes of scrubbing, and it does not scratch anything
Never combine products to speed this up. The one that sends people to an emergency room is an acidic cleaner mixed with a bleach-based one, and it happens most often in a bathroom, where both bottles are already under the sink.
What do hotels use on glass shower doors?
No secret product — commercial housekeeping cleans and squeegees every door daily, so film never gets more than about twenty-four hours to bond, and that frequency beats anything in a bottle. What should you never use on glass shower doors?
Acid on the wrong surface and abrasion on the right one are the two ways to ruin a bathroom in an afternoon. Both kinds of damage are permanent, and neither one looks like damage until the glass dries.
- No acid on natural stone. Marble, travertine, limestone and onyx are calcareous, and the Natural Stone Institute warns that products containing lemon, vinegar or other acids may dull or etch them. An etch mark is physical damage to the surface, not a stain, and it needs refinishing rather than cleaning. On stone thresholds, benches and shelves the Institute recommends a non-acidic soap scum remover instead
- Never mix bleach with ammonia. The American Lung Association is blunt about it: the gases created can lead to chronic breathing problems and even death. This matters here specifically, because some stone-safe soap scum recipes are ammonia-based — if you use one, every bleach product leaves the room first. Never mix bleach with vinegar or any acid either
- Check for a factory coating before you touch anything. Most modern shower glass ships with a hydrophobic treatment baked on at the factory, and abrasives and strong acids strip it permanently. - No melamine or magic-eraser sponges on coated glass or gloss finishes. They are micro-abrasives — they work by sanding, and they dull whatever they are used on
- No steel wool, scouring powder, pumice or razor blades on glass — they leave a network of fine scratches that catches the light forever
- Keep prolonged acid off cement grout and off the bottom track. Most door tracks are anodized aluminum, and acid pits the metal and strips the finish. Clean the track with an old toothbrush and dish soap instead
- Test in a low corner first — every time, on every surface, before you commit to a whole door
How do you keep soap scum from coming back?
Three habits, in order of effect: squeegee the glass after every shower, switch from bar soap to a liquid body wash, and run the fan long enough for the enclosure to dry. Prevention is worth far more here than any cleaning method, because a film that never bonds never has to be dissolved.
- Squeegee after every use. Fifteen seconds, and it removes the water before it can evaporate and leave its mineral behind
- Switch off bar soap. Its fatty acids are the raw material for the whole reaction — a synthetic-detergent body wash removes most of that supply, and the film that rebuilds afterward is noticeably thinner and easier to take off. This is the cheapest fix on the page and almost nobody has been told about it
- Run the exhaust fan for twenty minutes after the shower, and leave the door open so the enclosure actually dries
- Consider a water softener. It treats the source, which is the only permanent fix — but it will not remove what is already on the glass, so that still has to come off first
- Clean weekly rather than seasonally. A week-old film wipes off. A season-old film has to be dissolved. The interval is doing more work than the product

Will a house cleaning service remove years of soap scum?
Routine soap film is part of every bathroom clean, and always has been. Years of mineral buildup bonded into it is a different problem, and the honest answer is that it comes down over several visits rather than in one. That is a published exclusion rather than a judgment call made in your bathroom on the day, and the reason is the one this whole article is built on. Anything strong enough to strip years of bonded film in a single pass etches glass and dulls tile and glaze permanently, and that damage does not come back off. A company promising clear glass on the first visit is either not going to manage it or is going to do something to your shower you cannot undo.
